The future of Vulcan County’s economy is rooted in renewable energy development and continued growth and innovation in our agricultural base. The County holds major advantages in its diverse topography and climate, specially situating Vulcan County for successful wind and solar energy development. Vulcan County is home to Blackspring Ridge, the largest wind farm in Canada, with a capacity of over 300 megawatts. Travers solar, the largest solar project in Canada, is also soon going to begin construction, and will have a capacity of approximately 400 megawatts. Together both projects will have a capacity of about 700 megawatts, producing enough clean energy to power approximately 194,250 homes, and offsetting about 826,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
Vulcan County is located one hour south of Calgary and one hour north of Lethbridge, along major highways which provide excellent access to transportation networks. Vulcan County also has convenient access to major rail networks, enabling access to both domestic and international routes for shipment of goods.
